Physical performance: Maria Papachristodoulou

Rift is an interactive audiovisual performance for one physical theater performer and live electronics. Inspired and structured after a loose adaptation of the five stages of grief, introduced by Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying, the work recounts the journey of an artist’s emotional conflicts. The narrative consists of two poles: the performer who explores the physical and virtual space while interacting with sound and image, and the invader, represented by the algorithmic simulation of the real-life organism Physarum Polycephalum, which inhabits the virtual space and interacts with the on-screen material and the performer. Rift is an attempt to explore the ambiguous narrative space engendered by the co-existence of physical and virtual agency, mediated through digital audiovisuality.

I would like to thank Maria Papachristodoulou for the collaboration and her contribution to this work.

Technical description

Rift pertains to the category of live multimedia works that involve physical performance. Body tracking data is collected through a Kinect placed in front of the projection screen. The performer's movement is controlling aspects of the image and the music.

Control of sound and image is exchanged between the physical performance, live electronics and algorithmic elements, crafting an audiovisual drama with constantly shifting dynamics.
