ΠΑΡΑΠΛΗΡΩΜΑ (2026)

About
Program notes
Deleuze uses the term supplement to describe a creative complement that does not heal a void, but inhabits it, that does not replace something that is missing, but produces something new where the absence is visible. Artificial Intelligence learns the human through anthropogenic data that are often incomplete; fragments, silences, omissions. What it produces is not a copy, but a version that fills in the gaps in ways that no original would have predicted. From there emerges something that resembles the human, without being human. A form that is implied, but never fully established.
Humans, on the other hand, often perceive Artificial Intelligence in human terms, attributing to it intention, logic, perhaps even self. And this attribution functions equally supplementary: a projection that fills with meaning something that resists meaning, that clothes with familiarity something that remains inherently foreign.
The work is interested in the moment when these two processes meet. Not as a mirror image, but as a mutual construction: the machine that traces the human from its gaps; the human that produces meaning from the gaps of mechanical interpretation. In this double movement there is no original and copy but only the common process of filling the gap with meaning.

Technical description
ΠΑΡΑΠΛΗΡΩΜΑ (pronounced as "paraplίroma" - supplement) is an interactive multimedia installation exhibited as part of Specter Futures II. The installation involved a vertically placed 65" screen and a small webcam, discretly placed on top of the screen.
The camera received streaming image data from the audience member sitting in front of the screen. The image then would be processed by a machine learning algorithm which would deconstruct the image, recognise the face and then attempt to reconstruct it. The imperfect reconstructed face would be overlaid with the original unprocessed image data, initiating a dialogue between the true human face and the incomplete way in which the machine sees it.
Format: Interactive media installation
